Great 80s Movies

We all love movies, and the decade of excess brought us an excess of great 80s movies, no matter what your favorite genre is.

If you wanted to laugh, cry, think – or be terrified – there had to be at least a few 80s movies that made the top of your list.

80s Thriller Movies

Some of us just love to be scared – or watch our friends be scared.

Starting with some great 80s movies that would keep you up at night, a surge in the horror genre produced some truly terrifying flicks.

A Nightmare on Elm Street was, and still is, that perfect sleep with the lights on kind of movie. Teenagers were pursued by Freddy Krueger in their dreams, forcing them to try and never sleep again… The first installment of the franchise came out in 1984, and was so popular that four more were made in the 80s and a remake came out as recently as 2010.

Another great scary movie series was Friday the 13th. Like A Nightmare on Elm Street, it was a franchise, and the original was released in 1980 with seven more following throughout the 80s.

This time the villain was Jason Voorhees, who accidentally drowned in a lake at summer camp as a child. He was always coming back to life to go after anyone at the camp. People would never look at a hockey mask the same way again.

Another great franchise was Halloween, which started in 1978. This one had Michael Myers, who was locked in a sanitarium. He later escaped, returning to his hometown in Illinois to go on a attack spree every Halloween. There were a total of four released in the 80s

Stephen King – being the prolific author that he is – provided some great plots for some of the greatest thriller movies made in the 80s. There was Children of the Corn, The Shining, Cujo, Christine, Firestarter, and Pet Sametary.

Great 80 Comedy Movies

Airplane starred Julie Hagerty, Robert Hayes, and Leslie Nielsen. It could easily be considered one of the funniest movies of all time, and was a spoof of disaster movies in general.

Also starring Leslie Nielsen was the start of the Naked Gun movies with Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! in 1988.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was another classic 80s movie. Ferris took the day off – played hooky – from school to cheer up his uptight friend, Cameron.

There was the goofy slapstick and a crazed gopher in Caddyshack, a troublesome green blob named Slimer in Ghostbusters, and even a sports comedy with Major League.

Great 80 Action Movies

Some exciting action movies were also big hits in the 80s. A few elite actors made their mark in this genre. One of those actors is Sylvester Stallone, who was in the Rocky and Rambo franchises, as well as Cobra and other great movies.

Another prominent action figure was Arnold Schwarzenegger – aka the Austrian Oak, Arnie, or more recently The Governator. He was in Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer, as well as Commando, The Terminator, and Predator.

There was, of course, Top Gun, packed with super cool fighter jets, and Die Hard. Both were instant great 80s movie classics. More classics came in the form of three Indiana Jones movies and two installments of the Star Wars franchise.

Also included in great 80s Movies has to be Back to the Future, which made Michael J. Fox even cooler and made everyone want a Delorean. We sure do love our movies, and the 80s gave us some of the best.
