Awesome 80s

Filled with fun fashion, rad movies, and a bunch of great trends, the awesome 80s were a decade like no other.

If you still have a tape deck, go ahead and put your favorite tape in – we’re taking a look at some things that made the 80s so awesome.

The Newest Fashion

An icon of the awesome 80s was acid-washed jeans. The coolest pairs were from designers like Guess and Calvin Klein. They cost more, but were totally worth it – especially if they were pre-shredded, that just made them radder.

The jeans were snug and skinny, but some 80s tops were seriously big. Oversized T-shirts and dress shirts were all the rage. The T-shirts could be tied off to one side with a ring or scrunchie, and wide belts would be worn over the billowy dress shirts, which came complete with shoulder pads.

Parachute pants were another new staple in many closets. They were originally worn by break-dancers to make their moves extra smooth, but they caught on with the public and were the next big thing.

There were also new colors introduced in the fashion world – neon and pastels – but they were never worn together. Neon would electrify anything black or white, making the whole outfit pop, while pastels had a light and airy effect. Pastels were also a favorite of men throughout the decade.

80s Hottest Trends

Some of the biggest trends of the day involved hair. Big, teased bangs and long hair was among the elite hairdos of the day. Feathered hair was equally awesome, as was the mohawk and the mullet.

Rubber bracelets, hair bows, crucifixes, and underwear as outerwear were all part of the ‘pop’ look, and worn by almost every girl who idolized Madonna.

There were also leg warmers, the Rubik’s Cube, popped collars, denim jackets, and Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses.

Awesome 80s Entertainment

We loved the arcade and everything in it, but soon were able to play most of them at home. Not only did we have these awesome new video game consoles, but we also had tons of games in every genre.

Everyone could find a favorite, whether it was on the Atari, Nintendo Entertainment System, or the Sega Master System.

Pac Man and Asteroids were just the beginning. There was Galaga, Paperboy, Q*Bert, Donkey Kong, Pole Position, Duck Hunt, and of course, the hugely successful Mario franchise.

We had awesome music, too. Madonna and Michael Jackson were the two biggest stars, along with Prince, Poison, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Cyndi Lauper, Blondie, U2, The Police, and The Go-Go’s. Some of us still belt it out in the car whether our passengers like it or not.

To make the 80s even more awesome, the Hollywood movie machine really delivered. There were incredible action movies like ‘Die Hard’ and ‘Terminator,’ and comedies like ‘Airplane’ and ‘Better Off Dead.’

The most awesome horror movies were also made in the 80s, including, but not limited to the ‘Nightmare on Elm Street,’ ‘Halloween,’ and ‘Friday the 13th’ franchises. If they didn’t scare you, nothing would.

The 80s also gave us some of the best cartoons ever made. We had ‘Transformers,’ ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘The Smurfs,’ and ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,’ just to name a few.

We were never at a loss for what to wear, say, or do during this totally rad decade. The awesome 80s will always be remembered as just that…totally awesome.
